The knitting psyche

Well here we are again on WIP Wednesday.  I love this day, as it motivates me to keep my projects ticking along.  I've been working on myself lately, working hard to suppress my need to constantly buy new wool and cast on new projects.  I have loads of things I want to knit--all of which require the purchase of new yarn.  Now I don't have a huge stash, but I do have 5 separate contains of yarn that I could be using, but wish I didn't have to.

With that in mind I pulled out a tank top I knit years ago, when I first started learning to knit.  I was ambitious, didn't know what I was doing, and subsequently hated it.  Then I shoved it in a bag and hid it for, well, years.  You all know what I'm talking about.

On Tuesday, I pulled it out, frogged it, and then started looking for something I could make with the yarn instead.  I feel good, using what I have before I start to buy more.  My husband and I are working hard to spend less and save more (I've got big plans in my future), so doing this really is beneficial.  I'll let you know how long I can keep it up.......
Sirdar Calico

In addition, I've cast on my second (yes, you read that right, I'll show you the first one on Friday) Ramona tank top.  I'm using a different yarn from my stash (very similar colours though), one that I bought last summer to make the girls a tank top.  It is Sirdar pure cotton 4ply. I still have 1/2 of that original tank top done and sitting in a bag, but of course now it is too small.  Anyway, I don't like this yarn as much, but I'm going to try to stick with it, as it will make a nice top in the end.  I hope.  Here's where I'm at:

Terrible, blurry picture, but it does show the pattern rather well.

That's all from me for now, here are the hops:

  1. Good for you, reclaiming yarn (I love Sirdar Calico)!

I'm terrible at buying more yarn despite really not needing any. I am trying to work with what I have at the moment though!

  2. Well done on the recycling effort.

I could use your enthusiasm and do some of that myself. The only problem is those projects that could use a frog and redistribution were so lovingly worked on and had such disappointing finishing points, that I really don’t want to look at them again, let alone undo them!

But, we get older, wiser and more patient so maybe in the future.

I love the new combo of the pinks, really pretty. I can’t wait to see the other finished top as I am sure it is beautiful!

    Till Friday

  3. what a cute top!! and congrats on re-using your yarn:) i made a tank top out of cotton when i first started and i love it, but...it is more like a dress on me:( it has turned into a bathing suit cover up...although i have been tempted to rip it out and knit it in a smaller size...the ramona is adorable as well:)

  4. That is a lovely color for the Ramona top. I'm sorry to hear that you aren't a fan of the yarn though, if it helps, I think that it will make a great finished garment. Also, good for you for breaking down and recycling that old project. It is always a great feeling when that happens. Good luck on your saving!

  5. You are doing a great job. I have frogged things too because I just decided that I didn't like what I was making. Good for you! I had to resist new yarn yesterday so badly!!! There is this lovely tape yarn I found at a local store for a buck a skein and I wanted it so very badly! I knew my dh would have a cat fit if I bought anymore yarn so I didn't. I left the store with out it. Sigh.... Can't wait to see what you have on Friday!

  7. Know exactly what you are talking about. in my first year of real knitting I bought lovely Rowan botany or something th like to knit a baby blanket on size three needles using intarsia color work! Needless to say I got a quarter way through before I lost interest and have not repurposed the yarn! good job for reclaiming yours

  8. I love the pattern you are making with the raspberry yarn - it's so sweet! And good for you for trying to save $$$ and reuse yarn. (I apologize if this is a repeated comment. I'm experiencing computer difficulty.)

  9. I could learn a lesson from you as I have a top I started when I was just learning to knit that I never finished because it looked so bad. I think you are one wise woman to use what you have and save a little [or a lot depending on the yarn].
Have a lovely yarn along day.

  11. That tank top is so cute and I love the racerback detail! I have some yarns that I love more than others. My main complaint is if a yarn is splitty. That makes for slow knitting.

  12. I've been trying to stash knit, too. Unfortunately, a lot of my stash was given to me and it's yarn I don't particularly like. I'm trying to make projects from it, though. I really don't want to buy new yarn right now for budget reasons, never mind the fact that I need to reclaim some space from the yarn stash (which is about as big as yours is).

  13. I'm doing a moderate version of cold-sheeping this year (along with a Ravelry group) and finding it very satisfying to buy less yarn, and use more. I like it when yarn doesn't stay yarn, but becomes something good and pretty and useful.

  15. Good on you for the recycling! And the lacy tank top pattern is really very pretty?

  16. There were a few unsuccessful projects hidden away, but over the last couple of years I've really made an effort to finish up or tidy up. When my Mom became ill a few years ago she really felt guilty about all the unused yarn and unfinished projects she had. After she passed away I finished all her projects and now I'm trying to work down my own stash. It feels quite liberating every time I work my way through another box of yarn!

  17. Well done for letting a bad knitting project go. I'm sure you will find a good project to make the most of your newly reclaimed wool. I have a few projects that need unraveling. Might just follow your example!

  18. Oh yay for reusing!

With my worn-out-favorite-sweaters I think I could prevent yarn-buying trips for quite a while. ;-)

  19. Good job fighting the urge to splurge on more wool! I struggle... constantly. :-D The Ramona is going to be lovely! I really like the colors you're using!

  20. I love the color and pattern you used for the Ramona top!

  21. I'm making the Ramona top too! Your yarn shows off the diamond pattern much better than mine. Mine just looks like I've made lots of mistakes!

I love comments almost more than chocolate. Now that is saying something.
